As a goofball student in my high school chorus class, I remember joking around before our Holiday Concert and getting a good laugh from my friends when I pointed that that we were already at a nerdy school. Singing Christmas and Hanukkah songs in four-part harmony was over-achievement level nerdy! But our teacher, Mr. Morgan, got real serious with us and shared something I never forgot:

“This may seem uncool to you. But there are a lot of people going through rough times that feel even worse during the holidays. Maybe one of those people will smile today. That’s why we are doing this.”

As I wrap up what’s been the hardest year of my adult life, between leading our work with thinkLaw across 42 states, writing my second book, and building out game-changing new programs for educators and parents – all while navigating the transition of divorce, nurturing a strong, caring, co-parenting relationship, and moving – I want to encourage you to do those things that can create a smile for a person who may need it. And as someone who has often been that person who needs a reason to smile, I can testify to the intrinsic joy that results when we create a smile in someone else. That’s why we are doing this.

Happy Holidays!

– Colin
