Coming of age in the '90s era of hip hop music means that I am well-schooled in the power of the remix. Something about an artist taking the same song or the same beat and creating something new, but familiar, always stood out to me. Especially when you realize that making a new hit is exponentially more difficult than putting a nice twist on a hit you already created.
For educators, school leaders, parents, and even students, spring lets us know we are in the beyond exhausting, last chunk of the school year. This is a perfect time to switch into remix mode! Educators and parents can remix the “how are you doing/how was your day” song by asking our children to ask US how WE are doing. Flip the track on the way we typically do test prep by having students create their own multiple-choice questions based on likely errors. And knowing that so many hip hop classics are classics because of a large quantity of amazing featured artists on the track, do lots of remixes that maximize student voice.
Thanks for being a part of our journey for ensuring critical thinking is no longer a luxury good!
