Counselor Survey Highlights the Pandemic's Impact on Students' Social and Emotional Health
A recent New York Times article highlighted the results of a nation-wide school counselor survey, that said students are behind in their abilities to cope, relate, and learn.
‘Kids are more impulsive, less controlled, and struggle with emotional regulation.’
Ninety-four percent of the counselors surveyed said their students were showing more signs of anxiety and depression than before the pandemic. Eighty-eight percent said students were having more trouble regulating their emotions. And almost three-quarters said they were having more difficulty solving conflicts with friends.
The share of school counselors who said they noticed these student behaviors more often, compared with before the pandemic included:
- Showing signs of anxiety or depression -- 94%
- Having trouble with emotional regulation -- 88%
- Having trouble solving conflicts with friends -- 73%
- Breaking classroom rules -- 72%
The need to support our children's social and emotional development has never been greater. We are all worried about student anxiety, stress, and disengagement affecting their mental health and ability to learn.
